Family members in Japanese

Family in Japanese is かぞく (kazoku) – 家族. There is a difference between own family members and others family members when mentioning them in Japanese.

Own Family Members:

Parents = りょうしん (ryoushin) – 両親
Father = ちち (chichi) – 父
Mother = はは (haha) – 母
Younger Brother = おとうと (otouto) – 弟
Younger Sister = いもうと (imouto) – 妹
Elder Brother = あに (ani) – 兄
Elder Sister = あね (ane) – 姉
Wife = つま (tsuma) – 妻
Husband = しゅじん (shujin) – 主人
Son = むすこ (musuko) – 息子
Daughter = むすめ (musume) – 娘
Grandmother = そぼ (sobo) – 祖母
Grandfather = そふ (sofu) – 祖父

Own Wife also mentioned as かない (kanai) – 家内 and own Husband also mentioned as おっと (otto) – 夫 in Japanese.

Someone’s Family Members:

Parents = ごりょうしん (go ryoushin) – ご両親
Father = おとうさん (otou san) – お父さん
Mother = おかあさん (okaa san) – お母さん
Younger Brother = おとうとさん (otouto san) – 弟さん
Younger Sister = いもうとさん (imouto san) – 妹さん
Elder Brother = おにいさん (onii san) – お兄さん
Elder Sister = おねえさん (onee san) – お姉さん
Wife = おくさん (okusan) – 奥さん
Husband = ごしゅじん (go shujin) – ご主人
Son = むすこさん (musuko san) – 息子さん
Daughter = おじょうさん (ojou san) – お嬢さん
Grandmother = おばあさん (obaa san) – お婆さん
Grandfather = おじいさん (ojii san) – お爺さん
