方 – “How to” in Japanese

When in different places or situations, sometimes we cannot figure out how to do certain things i.e how to use, how to write, how to eat or how to buy something etc. In Japanese language, there is a way to express “how to do” different types of activity. On this post we will learn it today.

Japanese: よみかた (読み方)
Reading: yomi kata

Japanese: たべかた (食べ方)
Reading: tabe kata

Japanese: しかた (仕方)
Reading: shi kata

English: How to play
Japanese: あそびかた (遊び方)
Reading: asobi kata

Japanese: かいかた (買い方)

Example:

English: Could you please tell me how to buy ticket?
Hiragana: きっぷ の かいかた を おしえて ください。
Kanji: 切符 の 買い方 を 教えて 下さい。
Reading: kippu no kaikata o oshiete kudasai.

English: I do not know how to write a letter.
Hiragana: てがみ の かきかた が わからない。
Kanji: 手紙 の 書き方 が 分からない。
Reading: tegami no kakikata ga wakaranai.

English: Could you please tell me how to use this?
Hiragana: これ の つかいかた を おしえて ください。
Kanji: これ の 使い方 を 教えて 下さい。
Reading: kore no tsukaikata o oshiete kudasai.

English: Could you please tell how to go to Shibuya?
Hiragana: しぶや の いきかた を おしえて ください。
Kanji: 渋谷 の 行き方 を 教えて 下さい。
Reading: shibuya no ikikata o oshiete kudasai.

English: Could you please tell me how to remove this?
Hiragana: これ の けしかた を おしえて ください。
Kanji: これ の 消し方 を 教えて 下さい。
Reading: kore no keshikata o oshiete kudasai.

English: I will tell you how to eat it properly.
Hiragana: これ の じょうずな たべかた を おしえて あげます。
Kanji: これ の 上手な 食べ方 を 教えて 挙げます。
Reading: kore no joozuna tabekata o oshiete agemasu.
