How to use “for” in Japanese

For is an important preposition in any language. In Japanese language expressions, there are various ways to use it. On this lesson, we will see and learn about most common ways, so that you can use “for” in Japanese language easily. Lets begin:

English: This is for my family.
Japanese: これ は わたし の かぞく の ため に です。
Kanji: これ は 私 の 家族 の ため に です。
Reading: Kore wa watashi no kazoku no tame ni desu.


English: This gift is for my younger sister.
Japanese: この ギフト は わたし の いもうと の ため に です。
Kanji: この ギフト は 私 の 妹 の ため に です。
Reading: Kono gifuto wa watashi no imouto no tame ni desu.


English: I want to buy this for my daughter.
Japanese: これ は わたし の むすめ の ため に かいたい です。
Kanji: これ は 私 の 娘 の ため に 買いたい です。
Reading: Kore wa watashi no musume no tame ni kaitai desu.


English: I want to send money for my parents.
Japanese: わたし の りょうしん の ため に、おかね を おくりたい です。
Kanji: 私 の 両親 の ため に、お 金 を 送りたい です。
Reading: Watashi no ryoushin no tame ni, okane wo okuritai desu.


As you can see, you can use the word ため に (tame ni) to use “for” in Japanese language. Lets see one simplest example:

English: This is for me.
Japanese: これ は わたし の ため に です。
Kanji: これ は 私 の ため に です。
Reading: Kore wa watashi no tame ni desu.

Japanese: ご じょうほう ありがとうございます。

Reading: Go jouhou arigatougozaimasu.


English: Thank you for your opinion.
Japanese: ご いけん ありがとうございます。
Kanji: ご 意見 有り難うございます。
Reading: Go iken arigatougozaimasu.


Here, ご (go) is used for politeness before the word じょうほう (jouhou) – 情報 and いけん (iken) – 意見.

Simply add ありがとうございます (arigatougozaimasu) – 難うございます after + noun, so the sentence structure will be:
+ noun + arigatougozaimasu. Lets see one more example:

English: Thank you for your understanding.
Japanese: ご りかい ありがとうございます。
Kanji: ご 理解 有り難うございます。
Reading: Go rikai arigatougozaimasu.
