Japanese i adjective negative form

Japanese has two types of adjective. There is a way to express negative form of these adjectives. On this session we will learn how to express negative form of i adjectives in Japanese language.

To make i adjective negative form:

Replace い (i) with くない (kunai) at the end of the word.

Lets see some common i adjectives with negative form.

i adjective: おおき (ookii) – 大きいbig
Negative: おおき くない
Meaning: not big.

i adjective: ちいさ (chisai) – 小さいsmall/short
Negative: ちいさ くない
Meaning: not small/short.

i adjective: ひく (hikui) – 低いlow
Negative: ひく くない
Meaning: not low.

i adjective: なが (nagai) – 長いlong
Negative: なが くない
Meaning: not long.

i adjective: みじか (mijikai) – 短いshort
Negative: みじか くない
Meaning: not short.

i adjective: たか (takai) – 高いhigh (building/mountain)
Negative: たか くない
Meaning: not high (building/mountain).

i adjective: たか (takai) – 高いexpensive
Negative: たか くない
Meaning: not expensive.

i adjective: やす (yasui) – 安いcheap
Negative: やす くない
Meaning: not cheap.

i adjective: おも (omoi) – 重いheavy
Negative: おも くない
Meaning: not heavy.

i adjective: かる (karui) – 軽いlight (weight)
Negative: かる くない
Meaning: not light (weight).

i adjective: おいし (oishii) – 美味しいdelicious
Negative: おいし くない
Meaning: not delicious.

i adjective: まず (mazui) – 不味いunpleasant/bad
Negative: まず くない
Meaning: not unpleasant/bad.

i adjective: あたらし (atarashii) – 新しいnew
Negative: あたらし くない
Meaning: not new.

i adjective: ふる (furui) – 古いold
Negative: ふる くない
Meaning: not old.

i adjective: あま (amai) – 甘いsweet
Negative: あま くない
Meaning: not sweet.

i adjective: から (karai) – 辛いspicy
Negative: から くない
Meaning: not spicy.

i adjective: ちか (chikai) – 近いnear
Negative: ちか くない
Meaning: not near.

i adjective: とお (tooi) – 遠いfar
Negative: とお くない
Meaning: not far.

i adjective: はや (hayai) – 速いfast
Negative: はや くない
Meaning: not fast.

i adjective: おそ (osoi) – 遅いslow/late
Negative: おそ くない
Meaning: not slow/late.

i adjective: むずかし (muzukashii) – 難しいdifficult
Negative: むずかし くない
Meaning: not difficult.

i adjective: あつ (atsui) – 暑いhot (weather)
Negative: あつ くない
Meaning: not hot (weather).

i adjective: さむ (samui) – 寒いcold (weather)
Negative: さむ くない
Meaning: not cold (weather).

i adjective: あたたか (atatakai) – 暖かいwarm
Negative: あたたか くない
Meaning: not warm.

i adjective: すずし​ (suzushii) – 涼しいcool
Negative: すずし​ くない
Meaning: not cool.

i adjective: おもしろ (omoshiroi) – 面白いfunny/interesting
Negative: おもしろ くない
Meaning: not funny/interesting.

i adjective: つまらな (tsumaranai) – 詰らないboring
Negative: つまらな くない
Meaning: not boring.

i adjective: (ii) – N/Agood
Negative: くない
Meaning: not good.

i adjective: わる (warui) – 悪いbad
Negative: わる くない
Meaning: not bad.

i adjective: いそがし (isogashii) – 忙しいbusy
Negative: いそがし くない
Meaning: not busy.

i adjective: きたな (kitanai) – 汚いdirty
Negative: きたな くない
Meaning: not dirty.

i adjective: かわい (kawaii) – 可愛いcute
Negative: かわい くない
Meaning: not cute.

Note that, いい (ii) i adjective negative is よくない (yokunai). This is i adjective negative form exception/special rule. Hope now you have understood negative form of i adjectives in Japanese language. Remember the rules and try to use them when you have the opportunity.
